How can I add my own ingredient?

Easily add custom ingredients to your account using two methods: AI Spec Sheet or Manual Entry.

Updated today

Food Label Maker allows you to add custom ingredients in two ways: manually or using the AI spec sheet feature. Follow the steps below to easily add your ingredients to your account.

Using the AI Spec Sheet Feature

The AI spec sheet feature helps you quickly populate nutritional data for your ingredient. It retrieves accurate information automatically from an uploaded specification sheet by using AI.

  1. Go to Custom Ingredients – Click on "Add a New Ingredient."

  2. Upload Your Spec Sheet or Nutrition Label – Choose a file (PDF or PNG format) from your desktop and upload it.

  3. AI Parses the Data – After uploading, a confirmation pop-up will appear. The AI will extract general and nutritional information, allergens, and sub-ingredients.

  4. Review & Complete Missing Fields – Ensure all details are correctly filled in and add any missing information.

  5. Save Your Ingredient – Click "Save" to store your custom ingredient for future use.

Manually Adding a Custom Ingredient

If you prefer to enter ingredient details manually, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Custom Ingredients – Click on "Custom Ingredients" in the software.

  2. Enter Ingredient Details – Fill in the required fields:

    • Ingredient Name

    • Common Name

    • Category

    • Serving Size

    • Calories and Nutrients

    • Optional vitamins and minerals (if applicable)

    • Allergens (if any)

  3. Add Sub-Ingredients (if needed) – If your ingredient contains sub-ingredients, list them so they automatically reflect in recipes.

  4. Save Your Ingredient – Once all details are entered, click "Save" to add it to your database.

Your custom ingredient is now saved in your account and ready to be used in any recipe!

Managing Sub-ingredients

Including Sub-ingredients in the Nutrition Label

When using custom ingredients on a label, sub-ingredients must be included wherever applicable. For instance, a custom ingredient like "chocolate pudding" will require listing its sub-ingredients on the label to meet regulatory requirements. This ensures full transparency and adherence to labeling standards.

Troubleshooting: Missing Sub-ingredients on the Label

If sub-ingredients fail to display on the main label, try the following troubleshooting steps:

  1. Save Your Changes: Ensure that all sub-ingredients have been saved after being entered.

  2. Check Ingredient Quantity: Ensure you have added a quantity to the custom ingredient, as missing quantities might prevent sub-ingredients from displaying.

Best Practices for Managing Sub-ingredients

  • Double-check ingredient and sub-ingredient entries for accuracy.

  • Save all changes promptly.

  • Enter quantities for custom ingredients for them to correctly appear on labels. Applying these guidelines will ensure that you effectively manage sub-ingredients and comply with nutrition labeling standards.
