How can I create a simplified label for small packaging that displays only calories and ingredients?

How to create an FDA simplified label for small packaging under 40 sq inches, showing only calories, allergens, and ingredients.

If your packaging has less than 40 square inches of labeling space, FDA allows a simplified label format. Instead of the full panel, you can show only essential details such as calories, key nutrients, allergens, and ingredients.

A simplified nutrition label is a format that primarily displays nutrients present in measurable amounts. It is designed for products with limited labeling space and focuses on essential information, such as calories and ingredients, without including a full nutritional chart.

With Food Label Maker, you can easily create this format:

Before proceeding, it's important to ensure that your label complies with relevant regulations. The Simplified label style is designed to meet basic requirements but offers flexibility for additional customization. Always review your label to ensure compliance with relevant standards.

  • Go to Customize Label → Label Style → USA (FDA) → Simplified Label Style

  • This FDA-compliant format shows calories, nutrients present in measurable amounts, allergens, and the ingredient statement. The footnote section of the Simplified label can also be customized. For example, you may need to include statements such as "Not a significant source of …" to comply with labeling standards. To edit the footnote:

  1. Open the label editor.

  2. Locate the footnote section.

  3. Make the necessary changes to the text. This feature ensures that your label meets all regulatory and informational needs. If you need to display nutrients beyond the mandatory set, such as Total Sugars, Added Sugars, or others, you can manually add them using the label editor. Follow these steps:

  4. Open the label editor in Food Label Maker.

  5. Navigate to the "add/include additional nutrients" option.

  6. Toggle on the nutrients you wish to include in your label. This process allows you to tailor the label to meet specific requirements or preferences. The Simplified label style automatically includes the following core mandatory nutrients:

  • Calories

  • Total Fat

  • Total Carbohydrate

  • Protein

  • Sodium These nutrients are pre-selected to meet the requirements for the simplified layout.

We also offer foodservice label formats that display only the main macronutrients (calories, carbs, protein, fat), along with allergens and ingredients — also available under Choose Label Style.
